Pale Morning Dun (PMD) – Classic Mayfly Dry Fly
Finatics Fly Company

The Pale Morning Dun (PMD) is a staple mayfly imitation designed to match one of the most important and consistent hatches in trout fishing. Featuring a light yellow body, natural gray hackle, and balanced upright wing profile, this pattern delivers a clean, realistic silhouette trout recognize instantly.

PMDs hatch heavily from late spring through summer, often producing prolonged feeding windows on rivers and spring creeks alike. This dry fly excels in riffles, seams, and gentle runs where trout are actively feeding on emerging and drifting duns.

When trout are selectively feeding on light-bodied mayflies and ignoring attractors, the PMD remains a reliable, confidence-building choice that belongs in every serious trout box.

Why it works:

  • Light yellow body accurately matches Pale Morning Dun coloration

  • Balanced hackle and wing provide natural float and footprint

  • Effective during active PMD hatches and mixed mayfly activity

  • Excellent visibility without being overpowering

  • Barbed hook for solid hook sets

A foundational mayfly dry fly for consistent trout production throughout the season.
