Nicklaus captured the 1972 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in the very first major championship ever played on that course, winning by three strokes with a 2-over par score of 290. The victory was punctuated by one of the most famous shots in golf history: a wind-shaped 1-iron on the par-3 17th that struck the flagstick and set up a tap-in birdie, a shot Nicklaus himself called impossible to repeat. That win gave Nicklaus his 11th professional major, tying the record set by Walter Hagen, and came under brutal final-round conditions that produced the highest scoring average since World War II.

Pebble Beach held a special place in Nicklaus' career well beyond that '72 win.
