Wrestling Singlets: Sizing, NFHS Rules, and Team Ordering

A singlet that fits wrong announces itself before the first whistle.

Sizing, rules, and ordering timelines are the three places teams get burned. Here is how to get all three right.

Singlet sizing runs by weight, not shirt size

The most common mistake is ordering a singlet like a t-shirt. Singlets size by body weight because compression fit is the point. Adidas prints the ranges on the chart: on the Adidas aS101s Solid Singlet ($44.99), Youth XS covers 30 to 43 pounds, Youth Small covers 43 to 60, Youth Medium 61 to 80, Youth Large 81 to 95, adult XS 90 to 110, and adult Small 111 to 130. Cliff Keen runs from 3XS up through adult sizes on the same logic. Expect a singlet to feel snug out of the bag. Lycra relaxes slightly with wear. If a wrestler sits at the top of a weight range, size up once, never twice. A singlet that bags at the chest gives an opponent a handle.

What NFHS uniform rules actually require

NFHS rules require a one-piece singlet of appropriate cut, or a legal two-piece uniform of compression shirt and compression shorts. Undergarments that extend past the singlet must be tight-fitting and unadorned. Anything loose, torn, or modified fails equipment check. Manufacturers build to this spec, which is why match-ready singlets list compliance directly: the Cliff Keen L7943J Relentless ($59.99) meets NFHS and college singlet rules out of the box. Women's competition has women's-specific legal cuts. The Cliff Keen LW79OKC Racerback ($54.99) is an engineered women's fit, not a relabeled men's singlet, and it is match-legal across high school and collegiate women's wrestling. If your program wrestles freestyle in the offseason, reversible red and blue singlets like the Cliff Keen RS86J ($69.99) or the GCA Reversible Freestyle Singlet ($64.99) cover both corner assignments with one piece of kit.

Practice singlets vs competition singlets

Do not burn a competition singlet in the practice room. Daily drilling, mat friction, and constant washing break down Lycra faster than matches ever will. The smart structure is a two-singlet rotation: a solid-color workhorse like the aS101s ($44.99) or the Adidas aS102s 3-Stripe ($49.99) for the room, and the team competition singlet reserved for duals and tournaments. Many rooms skip practice singlets entirely and drill in compression gear, which is also the NFHS-legal two-piece path on match day. The full range of singlets and compression pieces lives in our Wrestling Apparel collection.

Team ordering timelines

Stock singlets ship now. Custom sublimated team singlets do not. Design approval, production, and shipping on custom sublimation typically runs six to ten weeks, and November is when every program in the country submits at once. Work backward from your first dual. If you compete in early December, your custom order needs to be finalized by mid-September. Collect roster sizes by weight class in August, order one size run sample if the brand offers it, and pad the order with one extra singlet per size block for midseason additions. If the timeline is already blown, stock solid-color singlets in team colors are the honest fallback: they pass every rules check and nobody loses a match over sublimation.

The quick checklist

Size by weight range, not shirt size. Snug is correct. One-piece singlet or legal compression two-piece, nothing loose. Separate practice gear from competition gear. Custom orders finalized ten weeks before the first dual. New wrestlers finishing a full kit should also read our guide on how to choose wrestling shoes, because the uniform is only half the equipment check.

Order early, size by the chart, and let the singlet disappear the way it is supposed to.
