Length, bow shape, carbon content, and indoor or outdoor construction all change how a stick feels. The best choice is not the most expensive model. It is the one that matches your height, skill level, and the actions you use most often.

This guide breaks down each decision in order. Start with size. Then choose the shape and construction that fit your game.

Field Hockey Stick Size Chart

Stick length should let you stay low without crowding your hands or forcing the head too far from the ball. Osaka's current stick guide uses player height as the starting point:

Use that chart as a starting point, not a substitute for stance and preference. A player who stays very low may prefer a slightly shorter feel. A taller player who values reach may stay with the longer option. The stick should support posture, not pull you out of it.

Mid Bow, Low Bow, and Pro Bow Explained

The bow is the curve along the stick shaft. Its location changes how naturally the stick supports passing, receiving, lifting, aerial skills, and drag flicking.

Mid bow: The curve sits higher on the shaft. This creates a balanced shape for first touch, passing, hitting, and general control. It is the cleanest starting point for newer players and defenders who value predictable contact.

Low bow: The curve moves closer to the head. This helps players get under the ball for lifts, aerials, and faster 3D skills. It suits developing and advanced players who already control the ball consistently.

Pro bow: This shape sits between an all-around mid bow and a more aggressive low bow. It supports quick hands, controlled lifts, and forehand or backhand play without forcing every touch toward a specialist shape.

Extreme or very low bow: This is a specialist profile for drag flicks, aerial control, and advanced attacking skills. It rewards exact hands and can make basic receiving less forgiving for a beginner.

The current FIH Rules of Hockey define the permitted stick shape and are the authority for competition equipment. Check the current rulebook if a model will be used in sanctioned play.

How Much Carbon Should a Field Hockey Stick Have

Carbon increases stiffness and power transfer. It also reduces forgiveness. More carbon is not automatically better for every player.

Wood, fiberglass, and low-carbon sticks: These absorb more vibration and provide a softer touch. They suit beginners who need feedback without harsh contact. The TK Maxi Wood Field Hockey Stick is an example of a foundation-focused stick.

About 30 to 70 percent carbon: Osaka recommends this range for intermediate players. It balances stronger power transfer with enough forgiveness for developing control, aerials, and more dynamic play.

About 70 to 100 percent carbon: This range creates a stiffer, more responsive feel for advanced players. The ball leaves faster when contact is clean, but mishits feel sharper. A high-carbon stick belongs with a player who already repeats first touch and striking mechanics.

Carbon percentage is only one part of construction. Fiberglass adds flexibility and durability. Aramid or Kevlar can help manage vibration and impact. Balance point, head shape, and grip also change the way the stick moves.

Indoor vs Outdoor Field Hockey Sticks

Indoor and outdoor hockey reward different actions, so one stick should not be expected to do both jobs equally well.

Outdoor sticks are built to handle harder striking and more wear. Stiffer composite construction helps transfer power through hits and long passes. Outdoor models also cover a wider range of bow shapes and carbon levels.

Indoor sticks prioritize touch, quick passing, and close control. They are generally lighter and more flexible because indoor play limits the role of full-power hitting. Wood and fiberglass remain useful because they soften the feel in tight exchanges.

Choose by Skill Level

Beginner: Start with the correct length, a mid bow, and a forgiving wood, fiberglass, or low-carbon construction. Early progress comes from receiving and passing cleanly, not forcing power.

Developing player: Move into a mid or low bow and moderate carbon once first touch holds up under pressure. This is where players begin to use aerials, quicker lifts, and harder passing without losing control.

Advanced player: Choose bow location and stiffness around a defined role. A drag flicker may want a very low bow. A distributor may favor a pro bow with balanced touch. A defender may value a stable head and cleaner hitting line.

Do not buy for the player you hope to become in two years. Buy for the skills you can repeat now, with enough room to develop the next layer.

Choose by Position Without Overthinking It

Position can guide the decision, but it should not override personal technique.

Defenders often prefer stable balance, predictable first touch, and clean power through passes. A mid bow or controlled pro bow usually fits that job.

Midfielders need a broad skill set. Pro bow and low bow shapes can support receiving, carrying, passing, and controlled lifts across the field.

Forwards often favor quicker handling and lower bow points for close control, deflections, aerials, and fast releases.
