Basketball Referee Gear Checklist: Season Starts in Two Weeks

Two weeks from tonight, a varsity crew will look you over in the locker room and decide what kind of official you are.
The gear you pack now settles that question before you blow a whistle.
The Shirt: V-Neck, One Inch Stripes
Basketball officials wear the black and white one inch stripe shirt with a V-neck collar. No zippers, no polos, no baseball style placket. The Smitty BKS-200 performance mesh V-neck is the standard: lightweight mesh that vents heat in a packed gym and stripes that stay sharp under arena lights. If you work a heavier schedule, the Smitty BKS-203 elite performance shirt holds its color and shape deeper into the season. Some associations use the grey shirt with black pinstripes for certain levels, and the Smitty BKS-206 grey side panel covers that spec. Confirm your local standard, then buy two of it. A doubleheader in one shirt is a long night.
Pants: Black and Beltless
Basketball pants are black, flat front, and beltless. Belt loops mark you as unprepared the moment you walk in. The Smitty BKS-288 four way stretch flat front pants deliver the clean beltless line with slash pockets and enough stretch to close down on a fast break without a seam fighting you. Four way stretch is not a luxury in this sport. You will run two to three miles per game, most of it in short bursts.
Shoes: All Black Court Shoes
Running shoes do not belong on hardwood. You need a court shoe with lateral support and a sole built for quick stops. The Smitty BKS-CS2 professional court shoe is all black including the sole, grips polished hardwood, and holds your footing through a full varsity doubleheader. Solid black matters. An evaluator watches your feet more than you think, first for position, then for the shoes themselves.
Whistle and Lanyard
Carry a pealess whistle, and carry two. The Fox 40 Classic with breakaway lanyard is the sound every player in the gym already recognizes: 115 decibels, no pea to stick, same tone in game one and game one hundred. Keep a spare on a Smitty ACS-501 double clip lanyard in your bag. A whistle that fails mid possession is a problem you can remove from your career for under ten dollars.
What Varsity Crews Expect vs Rec League
Rec league forgives a polo and gray sneakers. Varsity does not. At the high school level your partners expect the full standard: matching V-neck stripe shirts, beltless black pants, black court shoes, and a pregame arrival early enough to talk mechanics. Crews notice the official whose shirt matches theirs and whose shoes are clean. Assignors hear about it either way. If you plan to move up, dress for the level you want, starting with the rec games nobody is watching.
The Bag: Pack It Once, Check It Weekly
A real officials bag ends the pregame scramble. The Smitty ACS-SB Super Bag holds the full kit with room for a second uniform. Pack it like this: two shirts, pants, court shoes, two whistles, spare lanyard, black socks, undershirts, a towel, and a copy of your schedule. Add a small repair kit: safety pins, black shoe laces, and a spare fox tail for your lanyard clip. Football officials run the same discipline, and our Football Officials Gear Checklist shows how a well built bag carries an entire season. Everything above lives in our Basketball Official collection.
